John P. Wanamaker Obituary

John Philip Wanamaker, a devoted husband, father, and community member, passed away peacefully at the age of 88 on October 5, 2024 in Binghamton, NY. Born and raised in Nyack, NY, John was a lifelong resident of the area until he relocated in 2017.

John proudly served as a volunteer firefighter with the Nyack Fire Patrol, embodying a spirit of service and commitment to his community. He dedicated over 30 years to Orange and Rockland Utilities, retiring 28 years ago, and was well-respected among all who knew him.

An avid Yankees fan, John brought enthusiasm to every game, sharing his love for baseball with family and friends. He was also an active usher at St. Ann’s Church, contributing to the community of faith that meant so much to him. As a member of the Nyack Seniors Group, he enjoyed the company of his peers, fostering friendships and sharing laughter.

John was predeceased by his beloved wife, Carmella; his son, Kevin; his sister, Dorothy; and his lifelong best friend, Matthew Clark. He is survived by his son, John Peter Wanamaker (Susan Wanamaker); his daughter, Karen (Rob Henderson); his sister, Margaret Giddies; his brother, Edgar Wanamaker; and his cherished grandchildren: Christopher, Samantha, Peter, Clara, and Daniel.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to St. Ann’s Church in Nyack, NY, in honor of John’s enduring commitment to his faith and community.

John Philip Wanamaker will be deeply missed by all who knew him, remembered for his humor, warmth, kindness, and unwavering dedication to those he loved.
