Nyack High School Class of '55

Helen Jean (Traverson) O'Gorman Obituary

Helen Jean O’Gorman, 87, a lifelong resident of Nyack/Valley Cottage, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Wednesday, January 14, 2026. Born in Nyack, NY, on February 6, 1938, to Marguerite and Edward Traverson. Helen dedicated her life to her family, her faith, and her community.

Helen is survived by her devoted husband of 67 years, Patrick O’Gorman. She was the loving mother of James O’Gorman (Cindy) and Kelly Pifer (Allen), and was predeceased by her children, Peggy O’Gorman and Greg O’Gorman. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law, Jessica O’Gorman.

As a proud "Nanny”, Helen found immense pride and joy in her seven grandchildren: Justin, Kayla (Julian), Brendan (Casey), Kelsey (Eric), Katie, Anna (Aidan), and Paige. She adored her six great-grandchildren—Dani, JT, Landon, Zoey, James, and Millie—and was eagerly anticipating the arrival of her seventh great-grandchild next week. She is also survived by her sisters, Phyllis Chalsen and Mary Ann Scarpulla, and was predeceased by her brothers-in-law, George Chalsen and Chuck Scarpulla. She leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Helen was a 1955 graduate of Nyack High School and continued her education at Becker Junior College. For over 30 years, Helen and Pat were owners of Traverson’s Wooden Indian, a landmark coffee shop in Nyack. Through their business, they became pillars of the community, feeding neighbors and supporting local activities. The restaurant was more than a place to eat – it was a place where young employees grew and the entire staff became family. After decades of nourishing her community Helen’s greatest joy was found at her own dining room table watching her family find comfort in her cooking.

A lifelong parishioner of St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Helen’s faith was reflected in her service to the St. Ann's Food Cupboard and the Helping Hands ministry. To honor Helen’s lifelong commitment to feeding others, the family suggests donations be made in her memory to the St. Ann’s Food Cupboard, 44 Forrest Ridge Road, Nyack, NY, 10960.

The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the staff of Pine Valley Nursing Home for their kindness, support and care shown to Helen Jean during her stay.

Visitation will be held Monday, January 19, 2026 at 10:00am at St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church 16 Jefferson Street, Nyack, NY followed by a funeral mass at 11:00am.
